Raksha Bandhan in Chennai is known by the name of 'Avani Avittam' and is regarded as an important festival of Hindus. The festival falls in the month of Shravan on the full moon day that according to the English calendar falls in the month of August.
This day marks much importance for the Hindu Brahmins, as on this particular day they wear a holy thread and also offer prayers to the ancient rishis as well as ancestors.
The day is marked with recitations of Vedas and special prayers offered to Gods for seeking their blessings. As the day starts, the Brahmins take a holy bath in river and then change the holy thread worn by them. This holy thread is given the name of 'Janeyu' or 'Yajnopavit' and holds much spiritual importance for the Hindus. The ceremony is brought to an end by the recitation of pious shlokas and prayers from the holy books. |
