| The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated by the name of 'Nariyal Purnima' in the Western parts of India, especially in Mumbai. This special day is celebrated mostly by the fishing tribes as it initiates a new season for them. Raksha Bandhan in Mumbai or ' Nariyal Purnima' thus holds much importance for the fishing community. Nariyal Purnima is basically celebrated on the same day as Rakhi Purnima that is on the full moon Sharaavan day.
Gift giving and gift receiving is the center of attraction on this. Besides, decorating of Rakhi ‘thali' is the major activity of the day. As soon as the day breaks, sisters get ready for the Raksha Bandhan rites and rituals. Sisters tie Rakhi on the wrist of their brothers and pray for their success and good health. In return brothers too showers gifts on their sisters and pledge to protect them for years to come from all sources of evil.
In some parts of Mumbai, women celebrate Raksha Bandhan in Mumbai by tying Rakhi to Lord Ganesha in the first place. Lord Ganesha is considered as the emblem of good fortune and happiness. Hence, before tying Rakhi to their brothers, ladies and girls tie a band of Rakhi to Ganeshji and pray for happiness in the family. Lord Ganesha loves ‘boondi ka laddoo'; therefore, he is offered lots of ‘laddoos' on this day. They also put ‘tilak' on His forehead with little grains of rice. The laddoo is then distributed as ‘prasada' among devotees. Thereafter, they tie Rakhi to their brothers and perform puja and aarti.
