This is the day when clay idols in the shape of small pyramids called a Ma-short for Maaveli/Mahaabali are createdl. As the idol is created on the day of Pooradam, it is also called Pooraada Uttigal. Each Ma is decorated with flowers. In a place called Trikkaakkara, these clay idols are made from special clay gathered from the river banks. Hence Ma has another name-Trikkaakkara Appan. Sucheendram in the State of Tamil Nadu is the only temple where Vaamana and Mahaabali are worshipped deities.
On Pooradam, the size of the Aththapoo further increases. Last minute shopping, spring cleaning and visiting friends and relatives to exchange warm greetings of the festive occasion happens at around this time. |
