On this day which is the eve of Thiruvonam, tenants and dependants of Tharawaads (large joint families living in ancestral homes) give presents to the Kaarnavar, the eldest member and caretaker of the family. These presents called Onakkazhchcha, are usually the produce of their farms consisting of vegetables, coconut oil, plantains, etc., In reciprocation, the Kaaranavar treats them with Onasadya-the grand feast.
Houses are cleaned up on this day and people get charged up to participate in the events to take place on the following day. Pookalam is given a nice design with new and special flowers on this day. |
